Before I started kindergarten, I remember my grandfather buying a bar for his entertainment room. Although it was stocked with fancy glassware, it never actually held liquor. However, if you had managed to take a peek behind the well-designed, fancy bar, you would have found that it was stocked with an array of different flavored sodas and glass juice bottles. A child’s dream come true!
I would spend hours mixing all sorts of drinks to see what they tasted like. Some were horrible, while others became regular concoctions for lunch. I imagine that’s how Charles Alderton must have created Dr. Pepper. It’s made up of twenty-three flavors. So what are the twenty-three flavors? Well, they are listed as cola, cherry, licorice, amaretto, almond, vanilla, blackberry, apricot, caramel, pepper, anise, sarsaparilla, ginger, molasses, lemon, plum, orange, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, coriander, juniper, birch, and prickly ash. These flavors combined made up the smell of the pharmacy where Dr. Pepper was invented.
While I never created a famous drink, I still like to mix it up now and then. This is a nice refresher for the family. We just put it in a pitcher and keep it in the fridge. It’s super simple, super-fast, and super easy. Grab your pitcher and add 1 cup of lime juice (fresh always tastes better) with 5 cups of water, 2/3 cups of sugar, and 2 tablespoons of honey. Stir it all up until the sugar is dissolved. Put in the fridge to chill or serve quickly over ice! Better than Starbucks!
Garnish with mint leaves or a slice of lime! Be fancy and free! It really hits the spot on those summer days. Give it a try, and let me know how it works out.
What are your thoughts? I'd love to hear them!
