Let’s talk about mornings. The sun rises above the horizon, and light begins to creep across your home, filling every open space and crevice that your curtains left open.
You hear the birds begin to chirp as the determined few are up early enough to catch their worm, and you jump out of bed with enthusiasm, motivation, and eagerness to start your day!
Oh? You don’t do much jumping in the morning? Right.
Well, okay. You do it slowly. I see. Then when you ease out of bed every morning, all eager and enthusiastic to…
Huh? You don’t do that either?
I got it. It looks more like lying in bed wondering why you should even bother to get up in the first place.
Does your mind flash to the list of things you need to plow through today, or is it immediately filled with a list of all of the things you’ve GOT to get done?
What’s the difference? It’s the difference between opening up your eyes and then remembering that it’s your birthday or realizing you have final exams.
Most often, we live as though we have final exams every morning. Each sunrise brings more struggles, another battle, and more frustrated attempts to deal with our chronic burdens.
Meanwhile, a few happy folks do wake up eager. But, of course, they’re rarin’ to go as soon as the light hits their eyeballs. But how do they do that? What’s their secret?
Would you believe they don’t have any secrets? They find it in their heart to be happy in whatever circumstances they find themselves in. Even the “bad” stuff is treated with respect and looked at as a learning experience.
But they aren’t secretive about it. How others handle it is right there for the rest of the world to see. The only trouble is that the rest of the world is busy not seeing the sunshine around them; it’s the same sunshine that waits for the eager beavers.
Those living in the dark side have their tuner set to every event’s dim, gloomy, depressing aspects. Every day brings them the same occurrences that their bright-side neighbors receive, but since they’re stuck in the dark side, they must experience it all in shadows.
You have a radio of your very own, and when you turn the dial, the station changes. You have the power to capture all of those programs. But when you turn the dial, you’re only selecting one channel from the thousands of signals around you.
It’s sometimes foreign to think that your tuner can be set wherever you choose when you wake up each morning. You can choose happy, sad, eager, dread, or energetic.
What station is your morning mental dial stuck on?
If you’re not entirely satisfied with the daily programming you set your receiver to, it’s not too hard to change it, nor is it too late.
But you must be the one to do it yourself. Nobody else can reset your station for you.
I’m sure you’ve read enough “think positive” books and listened to enough podcasts that you have a reasonably good idea of how this works. You know WHAT to do, but still, you struggle as you’re not feeling the success in your struggle. However, you may be missing a key element to your formula.
When you do your mind change exercises, whatever form you select, you get up afterward and go about your day intentionally, looking and diligently searching for the evidence that it is working.
And because we are human and have been thinking the same way for years, it’s natural that when we don’t see immediate results, we start to question why it’s not working.
And the focus on the “why not” is where we often go wrong.
Instead of focusing on what’s wrong, it would be best to think about how grateful you are that it IS WORKING, even when you don’t see immediate results. Instead, fill your mind with fixed thoughts and practice seeing what you want to happen.
That’s it. That’s the key. Focus on your vision and call attention to the positive aspects.
It will surely make a difference in how you wake up every morning.
What are your thoughts? I'd love to hear them!
